In 1969, the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) electron-positron colliding accelerator was built to investigate particles within the proton and neutron. Physicists were able to detect the quark structure of the proton and, in 1974, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL)-SLAC physicists discovered the J/psi particle at SLAC's SPEAR (Stanford Positron Electron Accelerator Ring).
